"The manpower of any organisation is its backbone and it is imperative to properly motivate them through encouragement, and take good care of their well being so that they can whole-heartedly participate in the development of the organisation and the country with full peace of mind."
This was stated by Chairman Pakistan Steel Lieutenant General Abdul Qayyum (Retd) while addressing a huge gathering of over ten thousand workers and officers of Pakistan Steel at the Metallurgical Training Centre (MTC).
The first-ever ceremony of its kind, in which one bonus and a host of other facilities for the employees were announced, was exclusively held in connection with distribution of "Efficiency Trophies" among various departments of the organisation on the basis of their excellent performance during the year 2003-04.
Based on the unanimous decision of a high-level committee comprising senior officers of Pakistan Steel, Billet Mills was adjudged the "First-Best Plant" of the year, whereas the trophies for the "Second-Best Plant" and "Third-Best Plant" went to Steel Making Department (SMD) and Coke Oven & By-Product Plant (COBP) respectively.
In addition to the first three trophies, which was based on criteria of ten heads, certificates were also awarded by Chairman Pakistan Steel to different departments on the basis of individual performances on each of the ten heads. Cash awards and certificates were also awarded to around 50 officers and workers of RMHD (Jetty) and CMD for their outstanding performance during a recent crisis-situation in the department, which they had overcome with their sheer hard work.
An increase of 10 to 15 percent in the wages of daily-wage workers was also announced, which incidentally was the second increase during the calendar year. The Chairman in his address, informed that Pakistan Steel concluded the financial year 2003-2004 with record production (1.024 million tonnes), record sales (over Rs 25.8 billion) and record profit of over Rs 6.2 billion.
Terming the achievement a result of sheer hard work and teamwork of all the employees, the Chairman announced with pride that savings of Pakistan Steel were more than Rs 8 billion and this figure was expected to rise to $200 million (Rs 11 to 12 billion) by the end of the year - a fact which had enabled Pakistan Steel to go for the first stage of its expansion up to 1.5 million tonnes per year through its own resources.
Other facilities announced by the Chairman included Phase-III of the housing scheme Gulshan-e-Hadeed, wherein purpose partial collaboration with DHA was under consideration, as well as 100 percent enhancement of facilities in certain medical cases etc.
He also informed to give preference of allotment of plots in the propose housing scheme to the next of the kin of twelve deceased employees who had lost their lives in the past while on job including nine burn casualties at Steel Making Department in the past.
As regards the development and welfare works, the Chairman informed that the instructions had been given to improve the standards of the Canteens and raise standard of food.
He also informed about establishment of a, "Special Children School" and "Vocational Community Centre" in Steel Town. As regards ongoing road-carpeting, road-signage and architectural development works, the Chairman said that it was imperative to improve corporate image and the outlook in order to attract foreign investor.
The Chairman specially emphasised upon the immediately needed repair and maintenance of the machines and equipment of the plant for which he had sanctioned Rs 2 billion.
Congratulating winners, of the trophies and prizes, the Chairman assured the employees of his full loyalty with them and with the organisation and expected them to reciprocate in the same manner. Director (Production) Mirza Tariq Begg also spoke on the occasion.-PR
