In view of the prevailing volatile law and order situation, the Sindh police has decided to install highly sensitive scanners at entry/exit points of Karachi to check influx of arms and narcotics smuggling.
The decision was taken at a presentation made by NLC under the chairmanship of Provincial Minister for Home and Co-ordination Abdur Rauf Siddique held on Monday.
Giving the presentation, NLC officials informed the meeting that such scanning equipment was also being installed at the Port Qasim and Karachi Port Trust in the city as a part of cargo inspection.
They also briefed about the importance and advantages of such scanners including identification of vehicles carrying arms, explosive and narcotics, etc.
They highlighted the merits of gamma rays-based scanners in comparison with X-Ray-based scanner and explained that gamma rays scanners detect explosive, weapons and narcotics with maximum perfection, besides minimum radiation exposure to the operators/targeted cargo.
Officials pointed out that source gamma ray can specify up to 300 curie where as the operating temperature ranges from -35 Celsius to -50 Celsius, beside it operates in 95 percent humid environment.
Whereas, these scanners have ability to scan a 40 feet container in just 03 minutes.
Responding to the briefing, Sindh Inspector General Police Syed Kamal Shah entrusted the newly constituted committee with the task to determine sites for the installation and break-up of scanners required (both fixed and mobile) for the police.
