Sialkot district government has dissolved Citizen Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) with immediate effect and termed its functioning illegal. The step had been taken on the complaint of a member of the district government during the session of Sialkot district assembly held here on Monday.
The session was presided over by the Convener Arsal Waqar Ghuman. While addressing the house, Sialkot District Nazim Mian Naeem said that the CPLC was established without the consent of the Sialkot district government and District Safety Commission.
The Nazim said that it was a vivid fact that the Citizen Police Liaison Committee was serving as an adopted baby of Sialkot District Police Officer (DPO), adding that there was no need of setting up of CPLC in the presence of district government and District Safety Commission.
In the recent past, a large number of complaints have been received by the district government against the members of CPLC.
People belonging to various walks of life, he said, have informed the district government members that "the CPLC along with traffic police are creating harassment on various busy roads."
He assured the house that if needed the district government would constitute a new CPLC with active consultation of the District and Sessions Judge and worthy members of the district Public Safety Commission.
Naeem said that honest and able persons would be elected as the members of District Police Liaison Committee.
Expressing her views former chairperson of District Public Safety Commission Ms Naseem Akhtar Khawaja said that under the law the establishment of Citizen Police Liaison Committee was illegal in the presence of district Public Safety Commission.
She said that the sole aim of setting up of district Public Safety Commission was to provide relief to the masses of the district.
The member of the assembly Choudhry Maqbool Ahmad, speaking on a privilege motion, urged upon the house to condemn the so-called CPLC for its poor performance.
He informed the house that the membership of the Citizen Police Liaison Committee was Rs 0.5 million and all its existing members were industrialists, adding that millions of rupees were earned by them through the misuse of the name of CPLC.
Later, the house unanimously passed a resolution against the CPLC and recommended for its dissolution immediately.
