The Japanese Foreign Minister, Ms. Yoriko Kawaguchi, called on President General Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain on Wednesday morning.
The Japanese Foreign Minister emphasised the importance of Pakistan in countering terrorism and its role in promoting non-proliferation.
Ms. Kawaguchi expressed admiration for the leadership of General Pervez Musharraf and expressed full support for his initiative on Enlightened Moderation.
Ms. Kawaguchi affirmed readiness of Japan to continue to assist Pakistan in its efforts at economic and social development. She indicated that Japan will study Pakistan's developmental needs for providing Official Developmental Assistance under which soft credit and Yen loans could be made available.
The President and the Prime Minister expressed appreciation for the valuable economic assistance Japan has provided to Pakistan, which has made Japan an important development partner of Pakistan.
They also expressed satisfaction on the excellent bilateral relations and co-operative ties between the two countries.
They also assured the Japanese Foreign Minister of Pakistan's sincere commitment to non-proliferation. They also renewed invitation to Prime Minister Koizumi to visit Pakistan.
Regional and international issues of common concern were also discussed. Pakistan and Japan have a close identity of views on salient global issues.
