It has been reported in newspapers that the hundreds and thousands of mango trees in Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas and Sangarh districts have been infected and/or destroyed by an unknown disease/insect pest.
The affected trees dry out showing no symptom of a disease of their aerial parts. Many a dejected mango growers, with no hope of survival of mango trees, have chopped down the trees.
Since the mango trees start drying rapidly and soon die, the cause of which may be the soil borne/root infecting parasitic pathogen, it is, therefore suggested that a thorough investigation of the soil is needed to determine the cause of the disease or of the deficiency of nutritional minerals/fertilisers.
For the identification of the causes of the disease and its control, it is suggested that a team of plant pathologists, entomologists, and agronomists be constituted to investigate the causal organisms in diseased trees.
Detailed cultural and microscopic study should be carried out to find the pathogen or the deficiency in nutrition, wherein the nutrients are taken in by means of water.
