An orthopaedic surgeon of India, specialising in polio, Dr Kanti Lal Daga, claims to have devised a new technology for treatment of polio through surgery.
He said the increasing number of disability caused by polio in the Third World countries was alarming, and added polio made a child disabled from the lower portion of knee. Addressing a press conference at Rotary Complex, Dr Daga said he had trained some 2,500 doctors in India for the type of treatment innovated by him.
Dr Daga said he had come to Pakistan on an invitation of Rotary Club to conduct surgeries of persons disabled by polio.
He said out of 150 patients, he had selected 50 patients for surgery and so far conducted six operations.
The Indian surgeon said operations, conducted by him, were easy5 cheap and successful and a polio affectee could walk like a common man after the operation.
He said more than five million people throughout the world became disabled annually due to fractures for various reasons.
He said in Pakistan and India, most of such persons could not afford treatment of fractured bones and they passed their remaining life in disability.
Dr Daga said he wished to transfer this treatment technology to doctors in Pakistan so that they could help remove the disability of their people. He said if invited, he would participate in the workshop, being conducted for elimination polio from Pakistan.
Dr Daga said he had endowed his life for humanity due to the level of poverty in India and Pakistan. He said he wanted to see smile on the faces of the poor, which gave him comfort.
