NEC plans to increase its exports of mobile phones to China by 150 percent to more than five million phones in the next two years, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported on Sunday.
Faced with faltering demand at home, Japan's largest mobile phone manufacturer hopes to increase its share of the huge Chinese market, where sales grew to about 60 million handsets in 2003, up nine percent over the previous year, the newspaper said.
The company plans to offer features such as Internet access and offer a wider variety of designs to attract more customers, according to the report.
No one was available for comment at NEC on Sunday.
As of June, NEC had about a three-percent share of the Chinese mobile phone market, compared with about 15.5 percent held by Nokia and 14.1 percent by Motorola, the paper reported, citing a J.P. Morgan report.
Samsung Electronics Co of South Korea and Chinese makers provide further fierce competition.
