Partly Facetious: more officious than the highest

"I just don't understand these non-politicians-turned-politicians."
Published August 24, 2004

"I just don't understand these non-politicians-turned-politicians."
"I thought it is fairly easy to understand them. They sound more officious than the highest ranking bureaucrat who has survived many regimes."
"Or benefited from them"
"What?"
"Or a high ranking bureaucrat who has benefited from these regimes. Survival and benefits somehow seem to go hand in hand."
"Anyway, then these non-politicians-turned-politicians begin to strut around, promising the moon to the people. But, whom are you referring to?"
"The Chosen One."
"What did he say now?"
"Two things. First and foremost he said that he is going to announce a comprehensive development package soon."
"So, what he was announcing as Finance Minister was not comprehensive? Or did not include development packages?"
"I guess, I mean, that is the implication."
"Maybe he is taking his job too seriously."
"We should really advise him to keep mum about many things so as not to antagonise the power that is. I mean, if by his statement of a comprehensive development package he is implying that they never had it before then isn't it a slap on the face of the guy who has been ruling the country for five years almost? And on his own face for after all he was supposed to be in charge of the development packages for most of the five years?"
"Advice is something none of our politicians or non-politician-turned-politicians take."
"Well, OK, so it's a lost cause but the Chosen One must beware of the ides of irritation first...and he will see the signs."
"Yes, it won't be like Brutus and Caesar where the latter never saw the discontent turning into anger resulting in murder."
"Nah. I mean, even Jamali escaped relatively unscathed."
"But, what about the daggers in the Lota party?"
"They will be out in the end but because the Chosen One will have to keep running to the Power that Is he will remain."
"Almost like Blair is to Bush?"
"Blair has a country to run after all...Oh yes, I see what you mean."
"And what was the second thing the Chosen One said?"
"About Kashmir."
"As long as he keeps away from Kargil and just toes the Power that Is's line all will be well there, too."
