Edhi Foundation takes the lead with the launch of "Edhi Emergency Medical Service" with ambulances equipped with medical aids of international standard.
"For the time being the service is being introduced in Karachi to carry and save the lives of serious patients, emergencies and victims of accidents and prove to be the start of a new era," said Faisal Edhi, Vice-Managing Trustee, Edhi Foundation.
He was speaking on the occasion of distribution of certificates among Edhi volunteers who obtained training in basic life support under the department of Anaesthesiology and Surgical Intensive Care Unit.
Faisal said that later the service will also be started in other cities of Pakistan.
He thanked Dr Tipu Sultan and his special team as a result of whose efforts, the training of Edhi volunteers could be conducted successfully.
He pointed out that so far Edhi ambulance service used to shift patients and injured people. However, during the shifting process many injured and patients would die because of non-availability of timely medical assistance and it had been vitally realised the need for saving their lives during transportation to hospitals.
He said the ambulances of Edhi Emergency Medical. Service will be equipped with suction machine, vertical tube, airway, oxygen cylinder. laryngoscope, kanula, ambo beg, first aid box and neck collar.
These ambulances will be manned round the clock by basic life support trained Edhi volunteers.
Faisal Edhi said that serious patients and those dying due to excessive bleeding, would be provided medical aid during their transportation to hospitals while serious injured would be shifted to hospital through special stretchers.
He said the process of medical assistance will start right from shifting of trauma patients from home till they reach the hospital.
He expressed the hope that with the start of this Emergency Medical Service, the lives of 50 percent of trauma suffering patients could he saved.
