The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) members of parliament and Ulema action committee, while criticising the role of Islamabad district administration, have demanded of the government to stop character assassination of religious leaders/scholars forthwith to establish religious harmony and peace in the country.
They also demanded to withdraw fake and baseless cases against Maulana Abdul Aziz, Khateeb, and Maulana Abdul Rasheed Ghazi, Naib Khateeb of Lal Masjid as well as stop harassment of students of Jamia Faridia and Jamia Hafsa.
The demands came during a press conference here on Tuesday addressed jointly by MMA MNAs Maulana Naseeb Ali Shah, Maulana Abdul Maalik, Maulana Abdul Qayyum, principal of Jamia Faridia, and Maulana Naveed Hashmi.
They strongly condemned the negative role of the ICT administration for conducting siege and search operations against religious seminaries in Islamabad.
The religious leaders warned the government of dire consequences if their demands pertaining to withdrawal of fabricated cases and harassment of students were not met.
Briefing the media men, Maulana Gul Naseeb Shah said neither these two seminaries have links with al Qaeda nor they harbouring terror suspects in Deeni Madaris.
We are peaceful, loyal and patriots as any other nationals of Pakistan, he added.
Last Monday, Islamabad Police raided two religious schools set up inside the Lal Masjid and Jamia Faridia to arrest six clerics wanted for issuing a Fatwa (religious edict) against the army's offensive in South Waziristan Agency to flush out al Qaeda suspects.
Maulana Abdul Maalik told reporters that Kohsar Police so far not returned the licensed gun to Jamia Faridia administration.
He said victimisation against Maulana Abdul Aziz and Abdul Rasheed Ghazi was evident from the fact that the government is pressing an agenda to eliminate Deeni Madaris from the country one-by-one.
Maulana Naseeb Shah told reporters that siege and search operation of Jamia Faridia followed by late night raids at Lal Masjid were unjustified after Interior Minister Faisal Saleh Hayat acceded that Maulana Abdul Aziz and Maulana Rasheed Ghazi had no links with al Qaeda network.
While clarifying the media reports that a suspected servant of Osama bin Laden, namely Usman, was arrested from the Jamia, the MPs said no such person was taken into custody.
The news item was highlighted through media as per planned conspiracy, they added.
