The position of cotton crop was reviewed at a meeting of Crop Management Committee for Cotton held here under the Chairmanship of Minister Food and Agriculture, Sindh, Airf Mustafa Jatoi.
The meeting was attended by Additional Secretary, Ghulam Muhammad Memon, Director Co-ordination Naeem Ahmed Korejo, Dr B.Y. Khalid Technical Services Advisor Engro Chemical Pak Ltd, Anwar Hussein Memon, Cotton Co-ordinator CDP, Agriculture extension, Hyderabad, S.H. Nadeem Shah, General Secretary Sindh Abadgar Board, Akhund Ghulam Muhammad, SVP Sindh Chamber of Agriculture.
The meeting noted the cotton crop position very satisfactory despite acute problem of water supply and negligible reports of pest attacks. There has been some reports of urea shortage received from Sanghar district which was conveyed to fertiliser company's representatives who committed extra supply to this district.
Arif Mustafa Jatoi noted that final sowing position of 611,000 hectares, exceeded the federal government target of 590,000 hectares.
He directed the media cell of Agriculture department to gear up agriculture information messages to keep the farmers informed about cotton crop position on a daily basis.
Secretary Agriculture would also hold regular meetings with all district officers during this critical stage of cotton crop to ensure availability of fertilisers and pesticides and to monitor the crop health.
The minister observed that export of phutti to Punjab had already reached l38,500 maunds higher by 15 percent than last year. Arif Jatoi observed this was an initial indicator of expected bumper cotton crop.
