Closing stock market indices
Here is how major stock markets outside the United States ended on Monday.
EUROPE STOCKS EXCHANGE: European shares dipped in wafer-thin dealings, as a dearth of corporate news and economic indicators left investors rudderless ahead of key US data and the Republican Party Convention. A sour mood also descended on Wall Street, and a slide in crude oil prices failed to lift it.
On a more positive note, shares in Interbrew rose two percent to 26 euros after it appointed a new chief financial officer for InBev, the world's biggest brewer created from Interbrew's merger with Brazilian peer AmBev.
And Sanofi-Aventis shares outperformed the market after the Franco-German drug-maker unveiled a clinical study showing its anti-obesity drug Acomplia succeeded in helping people lose weight, which could boost future sales.
The FTSE Eurotop 300 index ended down 0.15 percent at 980.06 points, ending a three-session run-up to Friday's three-week high.
FRANKFURT STOCKS EXCHANGE: The DAX index ended at 3838.85 points, down 12.33 or 0.32 percent.
PARIS STOCKS EXCHANGE: The CAC-40 index closed at 3636.71 points, down 12.53 or 0.34 percent.
ZURICH STOCKS EXCHANGE: The Swiss market index closed at 5448.8 points, down 15.1 or 0.28 percent.
MILAN STOCKS EXCHANGE: The All Share Mibtel index closed at 20440 points, down 48 or 0.23 percent.
SYDNEY STOCKS EXCHANGE: Australian stocks shed 0.1 percent after coming within a whisker of setting a new high, hindered by a batch of stocks including market heavyweight BHP Billiton which traded ex-dividend.
The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index finished 4.7 points, or 0.13 percent, lower at 3,554.1.
JOHANNESBURG STOCKS EXCHANGE: The All-share index closed at 11158 points, down 5.35 or 0.05 percent. The All Gold index closed at 2012.56 points, up 27.1 or 1.36 percent, while the Industrial index closed at 7710.96 points, down 9.76 or 0.13 percent.
LONDON STOCKS EXCHANGE: The London market was closed for a public holiday on Monday. On Friday the market had closed at 4490.1, up on the week by 120.9 points.
