The Islamic Development Bank (IDB) has announced Science and Technology prize 2004 for the HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry, Karachi.
The decision was taken during the 29th session of the IDB board of governors, Higher Education Commission (HEC) chairman Professor Dr Attaur Rahman said while talking to journalists here on Tuesday.
The HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry, which is a part of the International Centre for Chemical Sciences, was selected for this prize from 56 Muslim countries on the basis of achieving a number of milestones, he added.
Dr Atta also revealed that the HEJ institute's emphasis was on raising the standards of training of scholars in economically relevant fields of Chemical and Biological Sciences and research mobilisation for future growth in new disciplines of science.
The institute had the single largest doctoral programme in the country with over 180 Ph.D. students, he said.
He also said that the IDB prize for S&T was aimed at promoting excellence among the S&T education and R&D institutions.
