A case to point out is that more than two years back commercial grade sugar was imported and cleared on payment of the import duty as assessed by the customs. Later, on the advice of the valuation department, it was informed that the sugar imported was not of commercial grade but that of pharmaceutical grade.
Therefore, a considerable amount towards difference in duty was imposed upon the importer.
Flabbergasted by this unjust imposition, representation was made before the customs authorities with the pleading that it was a case of mix up with other pharmaceutical grade sugar importers and the valuation department was not correct in demanding extra levy.
In the meanwhile, the importer was issued detention notices against their other imports of different merchandise.
Perusal of the matter for two years, at last yielded result. The sitting learned collector (appeals) took cognition of the matter instantly and passed an appropriate order modifying the earlier order passed by the subordinate officer, thereby setting free the importer free of this two years long dilemma.
The point to ponder is that with a little diligence and care, the subordinate staff of the government agencies may diminish the rising trend of public grievances.
