Pakistan can fetch a substantial amount of foreign exchange by uplifting its floriculture business in accordance with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) standards.
It was observed by the speakers at a workshop jointly organised by Pakistan Horticulture Development & Export Board (PHDEB) and the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (Smeda) on "Development of Floriculture in NWFP."
According to a press release issued here by PHDEB, Nauman Wazir President, Industrial Association of Peshawar and member SMEDA Board of Directors was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Stakeholders from horticulture and floriculture sectors attended the workshop.
Nauman Wazir gave an analysis of the strength, weaknesses, opportunities and obligation threats prevailing in the floriculture sector. Highlighting the efforts made by PHDEB for the development of the floriculture sector, he identified the need of establishing floriculture institute at Peshawar.
Peter La' Graaw, a floriculture expert from Netherlands, also shared his views with the participants along with his own findings on development of the floriculture sector in Pakistan.
He offered his services for applying modern techniques in cultivation and marketing of flowers for international market. He was of the view that Pakistan would not be able to attract the foreign market without following the latest standards set by WTO.
Dr Ijaz Ahmad, Manager Technical, PHDEB, gave a briefing on activities and future plans of his organisation.
