The Chairman Parliamentarians Commission for Human Rights (PCHR) Pakistan, Riaz Fatyana member of National Assembly (MNA) welcomed Malaysia's highest court ruling overturning former Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's conviction and sentence of nine years imprisonment and setting him free.
In a statement issued here on Sunday, chairman PCHR was of the view that the case indicated flaws in judicial system of Malaysia which should be addressed and removed for ensuring the justice in society without further delay.
"The Malaysian Federal Court's ruling is a step in the right direction in upholding the rule of law. Basic standards of fair trial were not followed in the first and second trials and Anwar Ibrahim should have been acquitted long ago," Riaz Fatyana maintained.
"The Malaysian government should now take steps to bring the country's human rights record in line with international standards," said the PCHR Chairman.
He urged Malaysia to sign and implement core international human rights treaties such as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
Anwar Ibrahim was jailed for six years for corruption in 1999.
One year later he was sentenced to further nine years.
On September 1, Malaysia's Federal court decided to overturn Anwar s previous conviction and found that the High Court had misdirected itself.
The Court also found that the prosecution's key witness was unreliable and in effect involved in the facts that gave rise to the charge.
