Punjab Governor Lieutenant General Khalid Maqbool (Retd) has said the universities must establish a close link with society and industry, to make education more need-oriented.
Inaugurating the 6th HRDC national faculty development programme, conducted by the Punjab University's Human Resource Development Centre here on Monday, Khalid said: "The universities are required to act in a multiple way rather than narrow-based manners. Teacher is a reservoir of knowledge and proper training enables him to transfer his knowledge and experience to students in an affective way."
Punjab University vice-chancellor Arshad Mahmood on the occasion commended the governor's efforts for showing personal interest in promoting higher education by forming chancellor's committee for launching new programmes and initiating reform agenda and updating the curriculum.
The university has developed faculty development board with a vision to enable a student to conduct research of national and international needs.
He said the university has adopted a transparent method in selection of teachers and during 160 selection board meetings in the last five years, 429 teachers were selected.
"It is for the first time that a teacher had to undergo pre-service and in-service training after his selection," he added.
Human Resources Development Centre Director Professor Dr Zafar Iqbal Jadoon said: "The Centre has been conducting faculty development programmes for the PU and over 70 public and private sector universities have been contacted to send nominations for this programme."
The governor also visited the Punjab University's Applied Psychology and English language and literature departments.
