Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda), since its inception in 1959, has electrified as many as 80,979 villages and hutment's, including a record figure of 7,193 during the last fiscal year.
According to a press release issued by Wapda here on Tuesday, only 609 villages had electricity at their doorstep when the electricity department was transferred to Wapda from provinces in 1959. The total number of villages and hutment's in Pakistan is around 125,083. Of them, 81,588 villages enjoy the facility of electricity.
As per statistics regarding phenomenal progress of rural electrification during the last 45 years, the highest number of villages were, energised during 90s while the lowest in 60s. Similarly, the record 7,193 villages during one fiscal year were electrified in 2003-04 whereas the lowest 74 in 1971-72.
According to the figures from 1959 onward, some 1,695 villages were energised in 60's. Likewise, 6,559 villages in 70s and 21,129 villages in 80's were electrified.
As many as 37,191 villages were provided with the basic amenity of electricity in the last decade of the 20th century.
Similarly, some 14,405 villages got electricity from fiscal year 1999-2000 to 2003-04, including 563 during the first month of fiscal year 2004-05.
As regards rural electrification in 2003-04, some 933 villages in Faisalabad Electric Supply Company, 380 in Gujranwala Electric Power Company, 557 in Islamabad Electric Supply Company, 275 in Lahore Electric Supply Company, 1921 in Multan Electric Power Company, 1232 in Hyderabad Electric Supply Company, 1220 in Peshawar Electric Supply Company and 675 villages were electrified in Quetta Electric Supply Company totalling to 7193 villages.
As far as the rural electrification in Pakistan is concerned, Sindh is at the top with 87.33 percent electrified villages, followed by NWFP plus Fata with 76.16 percent, Punjab with 67.60 percent and Balochistan with 22.07 percent electrified villages.-PR
