The lawyers community observed protest day on Tuesday to express their resentment against the elevation of judges in the Supreme Court against merit and in violation of rules and regulations.
The bar members wore black strips and also hoisted black flags on the bar buildings. Different bar associations also passed resolutions, slating elevation of judges in violation of Supreme Court decision pertaining to the appointment of the judges in the higher courts.
The bar members remained in the bar rooms and did not appear before the courts.
Meanwhile, the Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA), in a meeting with its president Ahmed Awais in the chair, condemned the elevation of judges in the Supreme Court of Pakistan against the merit and in violation of rules and regulation.
Among others, Hamid Khan, Kazim Khan, Hafiz Abdur Rehman Ansari and Sardar Latif Khan Khosa spoke on the occasion.
They said the government is hell-bent to destroy all the institutions in the country, adding that military rulers are playing havoc with the democratic institutions.
They said President Pervez Musharraf wants to divide the bars as well as its members by amending the Legal Practitioner and Bar Council Act, adding the bars are the only institutions in the country, which are fighting against the illegal and unconstitutional acts of the present rulers.
They also said the lawyers would continue their struggle for supremacy of constitution and rule of law, and added that the lawyers are united under the umbrella of the JAC of Pakistan Bar Council.
They called upon the lawyers to forge unity in their ranks to stop the rulers from illegal actions.
