The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) held its annual general meeting for 2004-05 last Tuesday at the Islamabad Club, chaired by former CPNE senior vice-president Altaf Hassan Qureshi.
CPNE General Secretary Dr Jabbar Khattak and its Finance Secretary Mehtab Khan presented their reports. The meeting lauded the establishment of CPNE Secretariat during last year.
Later, CPNE elections were held in which Daily Awami Awaz, Karachi; Daily Jang, Karachi; Daily Aghaz, Karachi; Daily Kainat, Karachi; Daily Ummat, Karachi; and Daily Express, Karachi, were elected on six seats of Karachi.
Daily Nawa-I-Waqt, Lahore; Daily Pakistan, Lahore; Daily Din, Lahore; Daily Tejarat, Lahore; Daily Khabrain, Lahore; and Daily Wifaq were elected from six seats of Lahore.
Daily Ibrat, Hyderabad; and Daily Kalim, Sukkur, were elected on two seats of Sindh, Daily Aftab, Multan, Daily Gharib, Faisalabad, and Daily Business, Faisalabad were elected on three seats of Punjab and Daily Awsaf, Islamabad, and Daily Sahafat, Islamabad, on two seats of Islamabad/Rawalpindi.
Daily Jihad, Peshawar, and Daily Wahdat, Peshawar, were elected on two seats of NWFP, and Daily Awam, Quetta, and Daily Zamana, Quetta, on two seats of Quetta.
Daily Paigham, Faisalabad, Daily Balochistan Express, Quetta, Daily Pakistan Observer, Islamabad, Daily Millat, Karachi, and PPI News Agency, Karachi, were elected on four general seats.
Monthly Naya Rukh, Karachi, was elected on one seat of Sindh/Balochistan magazines and Monthly Sheh Rag-e-Pakistan on one seat of Punjab.
Monthly Kiran, Karachi; Monthly Pictorial News Review, Karachi; Monthly Nai Ufaq, Karachi; and Monthly Rohani Digest were elected on four general seats of magazines.
At a meeting of newly-elected CPNE Standing Committee, Lahore Nawa-i-Waqt Editor Arif Nizami was elected as new CPNE president.
Lahore Daily Khabrain Editor Zia Shahid was elected as the CPNE senior vice-president, Khushnood Ali Khan as vice-president (Punjab), Karachi Daily Jang Editor Shahin Qureshi as vice-president (Sindh), Peshawar Daily Wahdat Editor Pir Sufaid Shah as vice-president (NWFP), and Balochistan Daily Express Editor Siddique Baloch as vice-president (Balochistan).
Karachi Awami Awaz Editor Jabbar Khattak was elected CPNE secretary-general, Faisalabad Daily Business Report Editor Abdul Rashid Ghazi as joint-secretary and Islamabad Daily Awsaf editor as finance secretary.
