The government is upgrading three major medical institutions of Karachi at a cost of Rs 353.374 million during 2004. According to the government document "Health Sector Reforms", these medical institutions are Jinnah Post-graduate Medical Centre (JPMC), National Institute of Child Health (NICH) and National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD).
The report said that the projects had been started for the improvement of patient care and to reduce the sufferings of people.
The Health Ministry will upgrade dentistry, cancer and physical medicine departments in the JPMC by spending Rs 17.8 million for the upgradation of "Patient treatment in dentistry department," and Rs 19.87 million allocation for treatment facilities for the cancer patients.
For improvement of physical medicine department in the JPMC, the ministry will spend Rs 11.908 million. A sum of Rs 3.937 million has been allocated for the procurement of instruments for laproscopic surgery department.
Installation of 1000Kv/800Kw generating set at the JPMC will cost Rs 19.8 million in PC-1 project. For the replacement of "transmission of electron microscope", the ministry has allocated Rs 38.900 million. A sum of Rs 39.990 million will be spent for upgradation of the wards and equipment in the hospital.
In NICH, the ministry has allocated Rs 53.369 million for upgradation of Neonatology and Oncology departments and for the provision of MRI.
A sum of Rs 19.179 million has been allocated for upgradation of "Neonatology department" whereas Rs five million will be spent on Oncology unit and Rs 39.99 million on provision of the MRI.
For the NICVD improvement, the government has increased grant to Rs 135 million and Angiography's unit has been upgraded by donations from philanthropists.
The report further indicates that during this year 7,000 specialists will be made available by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan (CPSP). But, the report says, there is a dire need to amend the behaviour of doctors and paramedical staff, who misbehave with the patients and their attendants.
