Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan has taken serious notice of slow pace of work at Lyari Expressway and discriminate removal of encroachments along the alignment of the project.
The governor, during a flying visit to the Expressway on Tuesday evening, advised the staff to apply extra care while removing encroachments and ensure that unnecessary disturbance is not caused to the people living in katcha houses. Provincial Home Minister Rauf Siddiqui, City Nazim Naimatullah Khan, Provincial Police Chief Syed Kamal Shah, Director General Rangers Major General Javed Zia, DCO Mir Hussain Ali, Lyari Nazim Abdul Khaliq Juma, Site Town Nazim Amir Nawab and other concerned officials accompanied the governor.
He said that removal of encroachments should be fully co-ordinated with other agencies and done in a judicious manner.
The governor said that co-operation from the representatives of the City Government should be sought as far as possible.
The officials told the governor that still there were obstructions and hindrances in the Hasan Aulia, Mianwali and Gharibnawaz Colonies and adjoining areas.
They said that people were also resistant and at times create difficult situations.
The governor said that the government had remained non-partisan as far as removal of encroachments was concerned.
He said that all actions had been taken strictly on merit and in accordance with the plan of construction to ensure smooth implementation of construction plan. All decisions were taken in the greater interest of the people of the city, he added.
Ibad said that all those who were shifted from the katcha houses or from the encroached land were compensated and the same would be the practice in the future.
The governor said that speedy completion of the project would be in the interest of the people. It would create jobs, activate economic activities and bring comfort to the people living on both sides of the expressway.
To sort out teething problems the governor has also called a meeting at his office.
The project director informed the governor that from Rashid Minhas Road to Yasinabad the entire area had been transferred to the City Government, whereas the entire area, about 95 percent, from Sindhi Hotel, Liaquatabad, to Sir Shah Suleman Road had been vacated and handed over to the Expressway project officials.
EDO Revenue Waseem Ahmed informed the governor that all actions had been taken under Land Acquisition Act. It had ensured fairness and justice with everyone affected, he added.
Project Director Lyari Resettlement Project Shafiqur Rehman Paracha said that all evacuation had been carried out with the consensus of the people and no one had been shifted against his will. Nothing had been done forcibly, he added.
The governor expressed dissatisfaction over the dilapidated condition of roads in the area and ordered the officials of National Highway Authority to repair the road connecting Mirza Adam Khan Road with Shershah. He also asked them to provide street lights.
The governor also met local people and asked the officials and the nazims to make arrangements for the repair of roads, street lights and sewerage facilities.
