A Foreign Office spokesman reported that the staff of Pakistani consulate general in the Afghan city of Herat was safe but the mission has been temporarily re-located due to eruption of violence in the city on Sunday.
Talking to newsmen at his regular weekly briefing here on Monday, Masood Khan spoke of the disturbances in Herat during which demonstrators had put some buildings on fire and civilians were killed. But there had been no damage to the premises of the Pakistani mission and its staff was safe, he added.
The violence, according to foreign news service reports, erupted after President Hamid Karzai replaced Governor Ismail Khan, a powerful regional commander on Saturday. The demonstrators had clashed with the US soldiers and the recent reorganised Afghan army personnel on Sunday killing seven and wounding 20 persons.
President Karzai was also reported to have replaced the governor of neighbouring province of Ghor that had remained restive for sometime but no reports of a violent reaction was reported from there.
