Through a resolution passed with a majority, NWFP Assembly on Wednesday asked President General Pervez Musharraf to follow the Constitution of 1973 and shed uniform before December 31 to fulfil his commitment with the nation that he made in his address to the nation. The resolution that was moved by Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarian (PPPP) leader Abdul Akbar Khan, said that General Musharraf should keep one seat and leave the seat of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) because the Constitution did not allow him to occupy both at the same time.
The members of opposition and treasury benches strongly supported the resolution and passed it with majority. In all 55 members from opposition and ruling alliance Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) have voted in favour and 14 members voted against the resolution.
Those who voted against the resolution included members of PML-Q and PPP, while those voted in favour consists of members of PML-N, PPPP, ANP, PTI, independent member and MMA members.
Opposing the resolution, PML-Q and PPP members said that the MMA had accepted the president in uniform when they passed 17th Amendment Bill in the National Assembly, therefore, they should not make hue and cry now.
They claimed that component parties of MMA had always supported presidents in uniform so they should not oppose President Musharraf in uniform.
