Closing stock market indices
Here is how major stock markets outside the United States ended on Friday.
EUROPE STOCKS EXCHANGE: European shares rose to their best levels in nearly 12 weeks, powered by gains in mining groups as China's expanding economy remains hungry for raw materials and pushes up metal prices.
The FTSE Eurotop 300 index ended up 0.58 percent at 1,001.21 points, its first close above the psychologically important 1,000 point mark since June 29.
Volume was good at three billion euros, boosted by the expiry of stock and index derivatives contracts across Europe.
The pan-European benchmark is up 1.3 percent for the week and 4.6 percent for the year, though still well inside is long-standing trading range.
FRANKFURT STOCKS EXCHANGE: The DAX index ended at 3988.07 points, up 24.42 or 0.62 percent, up 102.04 from last Friday.
PARIS STOCKS EXCHANGE: The CAC-40 index closed at 3726.22 points, up 34.5 points or 0.94 percent, rising 48.61 from September 10.
ZURICH STOCKS EXCHANGE: The Swiss market index closed at 5543.1 points, up 17.4 or 0.31 percent, a rise of 6.3 over the week.
MILAN STOCKS EXCHANGE: The All Share Mibtel index closed at 21079 points, up 129 or 0.62 percent, up 245 from last Friday.
SYDNEY STOCKS EXCHANGE: Top miners and News Corp. led Australian stocks to record highs, driving the market up as investors forecast further gains to reflect the prospect of strong earnings growth.
The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 Index finished 6.7 points or 0.19 percent higher at 3,631.6, the index has risen 35.6 points over the week.
JOHANNESBURG STOCKS EXCHANGE: Gains from heavyweights like Anglo American plc and BHP Billiton and stronger European markets lifted South African stocks.
The All-share index closed at 11,513.26, up 100.71 points or 0.88 percent, a rise of 286.44 from last Friday, the Gold index closed at 1992.59, up 9.72 points or 0.49 percent, up 48.98 from September 10, while the Industrial index closed at 7982.51, up 22.52 points or 0.28 percent, rising 170.67 from seven days ago.
