The government is reported considering introduction of e-governance and may soon solicit proposals from the professionals for it. It will be a major step towards good, efficient and transparent governance.
However, transition to it at such a large scale would involve not only procurement of huge amount of hardware but more importantly training of a very large number of government officials in its proper use who are generally computer shy.
If the users are not proficient it is likely to cause more hurdles and impediments than serve the purpose.
The famous adage for the computers - garbage in, garbage out - could prove itself literally true in our case.
In the meanwhile, may I suggest, as a first step, to expand further use of e-mail working in the maximum number of offices as it is much simpler and could initiate the concerned officials in the use of computers, thus preparing them for an easy and smooth transition to e-governance when it comes.
The e-mail addresses of the few that are supposed to be there are either not working or have been given their addresses just randomly by the ISP providing them with the outlet.
Not two federal ministers have any uniformity in their e-mail addresses.
One thing more the e-mail addresses should be structured very simply and systematically easy to remember, such as; designation of the officer with name of his department @ gov dot pk ([email protected]) or ([email protected]) or ([email protected]) etc.
