Closing stock market indices
Here is how major stock markets outside the United States ended on Monday.
EUROPE STOCKS EXCHANGE: European stock indexes ended down but off their lows as a profit warning from Unilever renewed pressure on consumer goods firms and rising oil prices kept investors wary of a slowdown in global growth.
Drug giant Roche lent support as it gained 2.4 percent to 129.25 Swiss francs after some positive late-stage data on its cancer drug, Tarceva. Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein raised its recommendation on Roche to "buy" from "add" and increased its price target to 149 francs.
The FTSE Eurotop 300 index of pan-European blue chips closed 0.4 percent lower at 997.7 points, erasing most of Friday's gains.
FRANKFURT STOCKS EXCHANGE: The DAX index ended at 3977.68 points, down 10.39 or 0.26 percent.
PARIS STOCKS EXCHANGE: The CAC-40 index closed at 3703.69 points, down 22.53 points or 0.60 percent.
ZURICH STOCKS EXCHANGE: The Swiss market index closed at 5548.5 points, up 5.4 or 0.10 percent.
MILAN STOCKS EXCHANGE: The All Share Mibtel index closed at 21061 points, down 18 or 0.09 percent.
SYDNEY STOCKS EXCHANGE: Australian stocks ended slightly lower after an early rise to a new high fizzled as a batch of stocks trading ex-dividend outweighed gains in major miners such as BHP Billiton.
The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index slipped 2.9 points or 0.08 percent to finish at 3,628.7.
JOHANNESBURG STOCKS EXCHANGE: South African mining stocks like platinum producer Implats stumbled as the rand strengthened and cut profitability, but banks and retailers extended their recent gains.
The All-share index closed at 11459.78, down 53.48 points or 0.46 percent, the Gold index closed at 1974.1, down 18.49 points or 0.93 percent, while the Industrial index closed at 7968.55, down 13.96 points or 0.17 percent.
TOKYO STOCKS EXCHANGE: Japanese financial markets were closed for the Respect for the Aged National Holiday.
The Nikkei ended on Friday down 0.51 percent or 56.87 points to 11,082.49.
