The government has decided to revise the price of LPG cylinder shortly, Petroleum and Natural Resources Minister Amanullah Khan Jadoon informed the National Assembly here on Thursday.
"The prime minister has taken notice of 13 percent increase in the LPG cylinder price and asked for downward revision in its price," the minister said while responding to an adjournment motion by the opposition.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Dr Sher Afgan said that the government had intervened in order to neutralise burden on the consumers and prices would soon be reduced.
However, both the ministers did not give assurance to the House in categorical terms that Rs50 increase would be withdrawn.
Movers of the motion, Sherry Rehman, Khwaja Asif and Khurshid Shah described the increase as great economic injustice to the people already crumbling under inflation.
They said that instead of the increase, the prices of LPG cylinder should have been brought down to give some relief to the masses.
Khurshid Shah said that the increase would not only put burden on the common man, but also lead to environmental degradation, as people would prefer to burn wood instead of gas.
National Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Amir Hussain did not allow debate on the motion after the voting was held, which showed that the treasury had 81 and the opposition had 79 members present in the House.
