Sea renders over 1.2 million acres of Thatta into saline land, Sindh Assembly told
The sea has played havoc with more than 1,286,983 acres of fertile land of six talukas of Thatta district and has converted it into saline land whereas the people rendered landless are yet to be compensated.
During the question hour on Thursday, Sindh Revenue Minister Imtiaz Shaikh, in a written statement in response to a question from Humaira Alwani, said that 170,267 acres had come under the influence of the sea in Thatta, Kharochan, 115,474 acres in Taluka Ketibander, 424,419 in Taluka Jati, 22,898 acres in Taluka Mirpurkhas, 521,865 acres in Taluka Shahbander, and 32,060 acres in Taluka Ghorabari.
The minister said that appropriate actions had been proposed and relief would be provided to the affected people.
On the request of a member for fateha the speaker refused permission and said that from now onward fateha would be offered only for those who had contributed toward the well being of Pakistan or in any field of activity that enriches social and cultural lives.
Syed Qaim Ali Shah welcomed this decision. Haji Munawwar Ali Abbasi on a point of order wanted to discuss the role of the Trading Corporation of Pakistan to which the speaker did not permit.
Despite the speaker's refusal Abbasi urged the house to ask the TCP to purchase Sindh's special aromatic sugdasi rice from Larkana which are lying in the godowns.
The session began with Shah in the chair at 11:15 a.m. The earlier requests of the speaker and the leader of the opposition to begin the session in time have not been fruitful so far.
