The Pakistan Telecommunication Union (CBA) has announced to stage 'gherao' the PTCL headquarter in Islamabad on September 30, hold a protest meeting in the premises of PTCL building, and pressurise the administration for acceptance of their genuine demands otherwise they would jam the telecommunication system from October 1 in the country, said Union leaders Kunwar Atta Jilani, Saifuddin, Nazar Hussain, Tariq Chishti, Naeem Chaudhry, Shahid Hussain, Asghar Ali, and Younas Bhatti, while addressing the workers on Thursday.
Demonstrators burnt the effigy of PTCL Chairman Junaid Khan while beating their chests. They were chanting slogans, 'save the PTCL from contract mafia', 'recruit lower staff to improve performance of the company', 'cancel the contracts of private companies in PTCL which were fleecing the public.'
They also said they would not compromise in principles, and are ready to give sacrifices for the cause, and condemned the centralisation of '18' (inquiry) describing it a conspiracy to render operators jobless. Similarly, the pay-card system would hit the employment of the Revenue department.
The participants wore black arm-bands to press the authorities for acceptance of their demands, and chanted slogans against the PTCL administration, saying that an army of officers are being recruited while technical lower staff was not being recruited to improve the quality, efficiency and performance of the company.
They threatened to observe countrywide strike on October 1 or 2 to force the authorities for acceptance of their demands and protest has entered the 10th day, and it began from September 14 by hoisting black flags atop of telephone exchanges as a protest against non-acceptance of charter of demand and not increasing their salaries by 15 percent as announced by the government.
The Union leaders said the PTCL was progressing by leaps and bounds due to the good performance and efficiency, adding the PTCL was earning profit, but the government was planning to dispose it of.
A protest meeting was held September 20 in Quetta, which was attended by thousands of workers of Balochistan, and on Thursday in Karachi, September 27 in Lahore, and September 30 in Islamabad, and complete strike on October 1 would be observed in the country besides, 'gherao' the PTCL Headquarter", they added.
