Federal Minister for Food, Agriculture and Livestock Sikandar Hayat Khan has stressed for successful launching of 'Grow More Wheat' campaign to achieve increased targets of area to be brought under cultivation and production.
The minister presiding over a meeting of agriculture scientists, officers and other stakeholders said sugar mills association had promised to start crushing on or before November 1 in Punjab and NWFP.
In Sindh the crushing would start from October 5 as announced by the provincial government. Cotton crop harvest would also be early so that more land could be available for early sowing of wheat crop.
The Minister also discussed the situation of water availability with the authorities. The IRSA representative informed the meeting that water availability would be more than 19 MAF initially through and may go beyond 23 MAF.
Various proposals about zero tillage, creating awareness, credit availability, and quality of inputs and timely availability were also discussed.
The 'Grow More Wheat' campaign will be spear headed by PARC and the provincial governments under the supervision of MINFAL.
The Federal Minister emphasised government wanted the farmers should get reasonable prices.
Similarly, the increased production would make the prices stable and the consumers would be able to get wheat and flour at a reasonable price, and comprehensive wheat policy had been framed for that purpose.
Additional Secretary MINFAL, ADC and Wheat Commissioner, Secretaries of the provinces and AJK, Chairman PARC and other representatives, attended the meeting.
