Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan has disclosed that his party's national convention would be held on Sunday, September 26 in which they would organise its general body up to union council level, while countrywide 'anti-Musharraf uniform' campaign would also be launched.
While addressing a press conference here on Friday Imran revealed that on its foundation day on April 2005, PTI elections would be held at district level.
He termed the Musharraf's dictatorial rule as detrimental to the country's national interest, as it has damaged the national institutions and the country as a whole.
"Musharraf was not acceptable in uniform as President, hence they would launch a countrywide campaign against General Musharraf to lay off his uniform," he added.
According to him, they would create awareness among the people of the negative effects of having a president in uniform. It would also be highlighted that national interest means improvement and strengthening of national institutions, empowerment of judiciary, having genuine chief executive in the country, and independence of election commission and NAB. During the campaign corner meetings will be held, apart from visiting bar councils.
He advocated for unity among the opposition parties to resist President Musharraf's move to retain the highest office of the army. He pointed out that had the opposition united earlier and not supported the 17th amendment, there would have not been Musharraf's dictatorship.
"In fact, it was the very 17th amendment that gave General Musharraf the legitimacy to hold two offices simultaneously," he added.
He was of the view that General Musharraf was heading towards stormy water, he would have to face a strong and united opposition if he retains the uniform and if he decided otherwise the 'loyalists' in the government would abandon him in search of new power corridors to gain benefits.
To a question, he said that his party would oppose a resolution on Musharraf's uniform in and outside the National Assembly. In his opinion General Musharraf would lay off his uniform.
"Under his leadership the country could not progress, as criminals were in power and were dancing to the tone of Musharraf, and if they resist they would have to face the wrath of NAB," he added
According to him, only supremacy of law and rule of law could lead the country on the path of progress and prosperity. Thus, it was imperative that judiciary was empowered and made independent.
Moreover, it was in the interest of the world that Bush loses the elections, as it has created uncertainty in the world by waging a war in Iraq and Afghanistan.
