Senator Mushahid Hussain has announced a donation of Rs 3 million for Quaid-i-Azam University Development Fund. He was addressing the History Department Alumni annual dinner on Friday night. He lauded the efforts of the University in the promotion of higher education.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, UAG Esani, said that the University would start regular post-doctoral program first the time in the history of any university of the country. He said that students would not have to go abroad to have fellowships and research in post-doctoral programs. All departments which have the capacity for such programs have been asked to develop these programs.
A donation of Rs 0.4 million on the name of Jari Ahmed Saiyid was announced for M Phil fellowship program for students of the Department of History on the occasion. The Fellowship has been instituted by Durdana Saiyid Rizvi Trust. The fellowship granted to an M Phil student is paid for two semesters which are almost 9 months. Speakers eulogised the role of Jari Ahmed Saiyid as historian. They were also very appreciative of the role of Dr Dushka A Syed as veteran historian and Head of Department who played a key role in development of the department. The department also launched its website on this occasion.
Earlier a briefing was given to the alumni on the recent achievements of the university, which highlighted commencement of self-financing evening program, strengthening of departments, setting up of computer labs and English language programs for social sciences.
Moreover, Department of Biological Sciences was upgraded to School of Biological Sciences. Almost Rs 180 million would be spent on bio-info Technology for the Department.
It was mentioned that a physics city is under development in the university. The National Centre for Physics would function on the same level as IUT Centre for Physics at Frieste. Almost Rs 330 million Accelerator will be installed in the Centre for Advanced Experiments. This Centre would have two separate Institutes of Vacuum and Laser Technologies.
The number of enrolments in M Phil had increased from 551 in 2001 to 620 students in 2002 and 674 in 2003. Total enrolled students in M Phil were 778 in 2004.
The number of M Sc students also jumped from 1671 to 2005 in 2002. IT went on increasing to 2208 in 2003 and 2691 in 2004.
The number of students enrolled in Ph D was only 301, which was 378 in 2002 and 474 in 2003. During 2004 the number of student taken in Ph D was 606.
Towards the conclusion of the program, students presented their various programs and offered vote of thanks to the guests and alumni.
