Terming unemployment as the biggest problem of Pakistan, the newly elected Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industry (LCCI) President Misbah-ur-Rehman has urged the business community to make dedicated efforts to eradicate poverty and unemployment from the country.
He was speaking at the LCCI annual general meeting during which he along with the newly elected Senior Vice-President Sohail Lashari and Vice-President Sheikh Arshad assumed charge of their respective offices.
Misbah said that those businessmen whose businesses are running in profit must employ at least two jobless persons in next one week. He said that personally he would hire six persons in his three business units within this week, as mere slogans cannot change fate of any nation. "If we want to make Pakistan Asian Tiger we would have to take practical steps, as situation has changed altogether and people believe in deeds instead of words," he said.
He said that LCCI would continue to raise voice for the rights of business community. There are still a number of issues including sales tax anomalies, high power tariff and parking lots at various city plazas, which need immediate attention. He said that the Chamber would make all-out efforts to resolve these issues.
Senior Vice President Sohail Lashari said that LCCI is a premier Chamber of the country with largest membership, "and we would do our best to bring in more members". Talking about high power tariff, Lashari said that the country badly needs new dams as high cost of power is harming all business activities.
Vice President Mohammad Arshad said that "we would try to come up to the expectations of business community". He said that there are a lot of problems facing businessmen and those, which are of urgent nature would be given priority.
The outgoing LCCI president Anjum Nisar said that he did his best to highlight the issues from the LCCI platform. He said that the business community had selected a very wise team and hopefully the new office-bearers would come up to their expectations.
Earlier, the Returning Officer Sheikh Salim Ali officially announced the newly elected executive members and office-bearers of the LCCI.
