A second ship, carrying 44,000 tonnes of Russian wheat, has arrived at Port Qasim and arrangements are being made to unload the grain on a priority basis to provide relief to the atta starved population.
The sources at Port Qasim said on Wednesday that m.v. Smarta, carrying 44,093 tonnes of wheat, arrived at the outer anchorage on Wednesday. This is the second wheat consignment of about one million tonnes of wheat being imported by the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP).
The Port Qasim Authority (PQA) Traffic Department is making arrangements for berthing and unloading the commodity on a priority basis.
The first wheat ship arrived at the port on September 18 and left on September 23 after unloading 40,520 tonnes of wheat, which was distributed among the Sindh, Balochistan and NWFP provinces according to their population ratio.
It may be pointed out that various areas of the country were still facing shortage of wheat due to the slow pace of import, which has led to the increase in prices of atta at various places.
The PQA sources said that presently all the three berths were occupied, but if the berthing committee decided to berth the wheat vessel, a vessel would be shifted to make room for the new incumbent.
