All said and done, the resumption of annual operation by sugar mills in Sindh from October 15 is still being questioned by sources close to sugar industry. Sources told Business Recorder that overhauling of the mills has not yet started anywhere in the province. In case the overhauling is completed in a fortnight, the mills may resume crushing as promised, but the operation would be just limping.
They said that boilers would be blown on heating but crushing would be nominal.
The holy month of Ramazan is expected to start roundabout October 15. The whole month the labour for cutting the cane and its transport to the factories will be in shortage.
Two religious festivals, Eid and Diwali may take place roundabout November 15. The shortage of labour at that time may be more severe.
Thus, sources said, the mills management may have more excuses. In any case, the growers will have to suffer in all respects.
The crushing will gain momentum in December both in Punjab and Sindh.
Sindh Chief Minister is reported to be very serious. For the first time, the provincial government has decided to take action against the delaying tactics of the mills.
This subject has always been handled by the Federal Government, but this year the Provincial Government has stepped in with serious view.
Business Recorder understands that some Federal Ministers spoke in favour of mill owners but the Chief Minister disagreed with them and he spoke to the Prime Minister that mills management would be dealt with for properly operating and clearing the old dues to the growers who are facing hardships with no fault of theirs.
