Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Sunday reviewed the progress of Gwadar Port project and directed the Port Authority to complete the work and make it operational by January 2005. The Director General Gwadar Development Authority and Gwadar Port Authority briefed the Prime Minister on the progress of the project and supporting facilities being provided at the Port.
The Prime Minister said that Gwadar Port is a project of national importance and added that opening of the Port would enhance the linkage of the country with Afghanistan, Central Asian States and the Persian Gulf states. The Port would accelerate the economic activities in the region, he added.
Shaukat also directed the Gwadar Development Authority to encourage and facilitate the small and medium scale entrepreneurs to promote their activities.
The Prime Minister said Smeda, SME Bank, Khushhali Bank, denationalised banks and other financial institutions should also be invited and facilitated to open their operations in Gwadar to facilitate industrial sectors to promote industries in the area.
He also directed the Civil Aviation Authority to identify suitable site for the construction of new airport to cater Boeing operations and other future needs.
The Prime Minister said that after the identification of the site, arrangements should be made for the construction of new airport.
He asked the CAA to co-ordinate with Gwadar Development Authority to initiate the process of acquiring land for the airport.
The Prime Minister directed the Gwadar Development Authority and Gwadar Port Authority to work in close co-ordination with each other and facilitate the operations and functions of the port through mutual co-operation.
The Prime Minister was informed that after the development, Gwadar would be half the size of Islamabad City within three to four years' time.
He was also informed that desalination plant would be established in Gwadar which would also generate 3 mega watts electricity.
The Prime Minister was informed that four model schools--two for boys and two for girls--would be set up at Gwadar. He was also informed that a world class golf course was being developed in Gwadar.
The Prime Minister was also informed that 350-bed hospital would be construction at Gwadar besides a fishermen's town, fishing jetty and a most modern sports complex and five-star hotels.
Balochistan Governor Owais Ghani, Chief Minister Mohammad Yousaf and Federal Ministers also attended the meeting.
