To achieve food security in the country a special campaign is being launched from October 11, to enhance awareness about better production among the farming community.
Agriculture Development Commissioner, Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Dr Mohammad Hanif said this while speaking in a PTV programme on Saturday.
He said, the campaign will be run through TV and radio and experts will disseminate information about better wheat production. Government is taking a number of steps for promotion of per acre wheat production, he added.
He said, in view of the importance of agriculture sector, government has already announced a number of incentives aimed at enhancing the agri-production.
Replying to a question, he said timely cultivation, use of technology and efficient use of water is important for better production of wheat crop.
He said few years ago, food security was achieved but due to natural factors and increase in population, it could not be maintained. He said that during last five years population has increased about 15 million which increased the demand of wheat up to two million tonnes.
Dr Mohammad Hanif said, most suitable cultivation time for wheat crop is October and November. Sowing in December decreases the production of the crop, he added.
He said, fertiliser should also be used properly besides certified seeds. If, farmers want to use their own variety of seeds then, it must be clean and graded, he said.
