Australia defeated India by 217 runs in the first cricket Test here on Sunday to take a 1-0 lead in the four-match series.
The hosts, who resumed their second innings at a precarious 105-6, were dismissed for 239 in the post-lunch session on the fifth and final day at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.
India slipped to 125 for eight before tailenders Irfan Pathan and Harbhajan Singh frustrated the Australians by adding 89 for the ninth wicket.
The 19-year-old Pathan hit a career-best 55, while Harbhajan made 42.
Shane Warne, who began the day needing one more wicket to equal Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan's world record of 532, failed to strike in 13 overs which cost 55 runs.
Australia are aiming to win their first series on Indian soil since 1969, having lost the two previous series in 1998 and 2001 by identical 2-1 margins.
The second Test begins at the Chepauk in Madras on Thursday, the venue of the tied Test between the same teams in September 1986.
