Partly Facetious: let army control law and order

"So fighting terror is in our supreme national interest?"
Published October 12, 2004

"So fighting terror is in our supreme national interest?"
"Yeah, I heard the foreign office chappie say that too but you know he is merely saying what he is told to say. But that aside I don't think there should be any doubt whatsoever that fighting terrorism is in our interest."
"I agree but before anything one must define terror and terrorists and then assess how best to deal with the terrorists - fighting them and killing as many as you can doesn't seem to be working anywhere in the world?"
"But isn't the definition obvious?"
"No, because with everyone following Bush's definition..."
"But he is the President of the most powerful country in the world - a country that under his administration has decided to use the threat of pre-emptive strikes to subdue or shut up any resistance to its ideas and values."
"So what you are saying is that we have no other option but to take his definition as our own."
"I don't think it's that simple. The attacks in the many Imambargahs and mosques in our country in recent months are disturbing to say the least with the most recent assassination of Mufti Jameel Ahmed Khan and Taunsvi..."
"Yes, besides hundreds of worshippers have been massacred at Friday prayers. My point is we need to beef up security and as the civilians can't quite deal with this situation I propose that the army step in to control over law and order."
"But..."
"But nothing, my friend. We are following what the Americans are doing too exactly and with similar results. We sent our armed forces with sophisticated weaponry into WANA with catastrophic consequences. Like the Americans are killing civilians with their precision attacks. The result is hatred for the Americans in Iraq and hatred for our army in WANA and amongst those who support the tribals in NWFP and Balochistan. Because the Americans are more powerful militarily the Iraqis can't attack the armed forces so they took to insurgencies as well as kidnappings. I was devastated to hear that two Chinese were kidnapped in WANA recently. I mean devastated."
"This is serious. Maybe the Chosen One needs to turn his attention to WANA instead of making obvious statements that are totally non-political."
"What did he say?"
"He exhorted the PNSC to expand their fleet so that we can have more exports."
"Duh!"
"Yes but be fair to him. He has no other mandate."
