The Central Board of Revenue (CBR) has received total 1,092,062 income tax returns up to October 15, 2004, against 1,006,489 filed up to October 30, 2003, showing an increase of 8.5 percent. The amount of tax paid with the returns up to October 15 this year was Rs 6.196 billion, against Rs 2.411 billion collected last year, showing an extraordinary increase of 157 percent. The CBR expects more increase in revenue on the basis of updated data in the coming days.
The CBR opined that the huge increase in tax collected from returns was due to simplification of income tax return forms, minimum annexures attached with the forms, dispute resolution and facilitation. This encouraged the taxpayers to come forward and file their returns along with the tax.
Official sources told Business Recorder here on Saturday that the Prime Minister has congratulated CBR Chairman Abdullah Yusuf and his team of tax managers on the success of tax awareness campaign which encouraged voluntary compliance under the Universal Self Assessment Scheme (USAS).
According to the break-up of income tax returns received up to October 15, 2004, total number of corporate returns was 1,288 up to Oct 15 against 1,232 filed up to October 30, 2003; Association of Persons (AOPs) 24,507, against 22,133; salaried 496,358, against 431,583; non-salaried individuals 491,905, against 496,690, and statements of final tax received were 78004 up to October 15, 2004, against 52860 statements received up to October 30, 2003.
Officials said that all arrangements have been finalised for data entry of returns at the Centralised Data Entry Centre at Islamabad. The returns would be used for carrying out maximum analysis of different categories of taxpayers.
