As many as 482 industrial units are functioning in Sheikhupura district but only seven of them are fulfilling the national environmental quality standard (NEQS).
The rest 475 are spreading pollution, posing death threats to the inhabitants residing around them, besides badly affecting crops.
The people, animals and birds are also dying after drinking polluted water and contaminated fodder.
The pollution is causing respiratory diseases, dust allergy, cancer, TB, hepatitis, skin and other fatal diseases. The untreated water has also affected underground water, fodder, crops, vegetables, fruits, gardens and also milk.
Many textiles, dying, tannery, brick kilns, fertiliser, steel furnaces, paper board and chemical industries, located on major roads in the district, have become health hazards for humans, birds and animals.
It was observed during a survey conducted by the PPI correspondent at Sheikhupura that smoke, effluents, chemical-mixed water and ashes were becoming death threat.
In Tibbi Harya village, located on Sheikhupura-Faisalabad road, more than 35 villagers have suffered from TB, chest infection, hepatitis, lungs, eyes, liver, skin and respiratory diseases.
The drinking water obtained from hand pumps and wells in the said area is contaminated and has been declared injuries to health after laboratory tests.
According to a report published in a newspaper, 2 billion people are forced to live in polluted atmosphere all over the world. There are more than 70,000 chemical items being manufactured in the world, out of which 40,000 have already been declared most harmful for the atmosphere.
The production of fisheries has decreased by 7,000 tons in our rivers annually due to the polluted water and 900 million-litre effluent and chemical discharged from the factories were polluting water reservoirs annually.
FACTORY DEATHS: During the survey it was revealed that three people, Boota, Younus and Inayat Bibi died in a chemical factory, situated on G.T road, due to leakage of poisonous gas some time back.
Unfortunately, no stern action has so for been taken against the factory owner and other concerned.
The area people said that the said factory is discharging poisons for a long period. Scores of peoples have urged the management to avoid discharging polluted water in Chichuki Mallian drain.
POLICE FIRING: They were demanding the administration to stop this practice which, they said, was affecting their health and damaging their crops.
The administration, instead of accepting their demands, resorted to indiscriminate firing at the protesters, killing one Javaid Kalyar and injuring many others.
After this firing incident the factory area police registered a case against the protestors under section 302/148 and 149/109 of PPC against six people, including the mill owner, administration manager, security in charge, DSP city, SHO Sadar Sheikhupura and housing colony police in charge on the complaint of Mazhar Jamil Kalyar, the brother of the deceased.
After this incident factory owners are still dumping water in UCC canal and causing pollution. Now the citizens demanded from higher authorities for strong action against those industries, which are spreading pollution in Sheikhupura district.
