Improving stock markets and strong commodity price increases saw almost all hedge fund strategies post a positive return in September, research from French business school Edhec showed on Friday.
The survey of alternative investment strategies for global hedge funds found only 2 out of 13 had negative returns in September.
Directional strategies like CTA Global funds, emerging markets and long/short equity funds were the strongest performers while fixed income strategies suffered.
CTA Global funds trade commodity futures, options and foreign exchange. This strategy had been performing badly this year, posting negative returns over the last six months in a row.
However, in September strong commodity prices helped managers return 2.16 percent on average.
Emerging markets was the best performing strategy, up 2.87 percent, while long short equity funds were helped by the good performance of value and small cap stocks returning 2.16 percent on average.
