Adviser to Punjab Chief Minister for Law and Human Rights, Rana Ijaz Ahmed Khan has said that present government is taking solid steps for the provision of legal aid to the deprived and poor prisoners with the assistance of philanthropists and donors agencies.
He expressed these views while inspecting the district jail, here on Sunday. Rana Ijaz informed that the Chief Minister Punjab, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi had given special grants to all jails in the province regarding supply of better food and medical facilities besides constructions of additional cells in almost all jails.
He took a round of the various cells including women prisoners barrack and juvenile, barrack and questioned the prisoners about the behaviour of staff, food and their legal cases.
He directed the jail superintendent, Zia Ullah Chaudhry that the matters about the meeting between prisoners and visitors be made transparent and commodities being sent to prisoners by visitors must be scrutinised.
Jail Superintendent, Chaudhry Zia Ullah told the advisor that the capacity of jail Kasur was 544 prisoners but 1,513 prisoners were being kept at present. However, the construction work on 32 more death cells are in progress.
The advisor directed the jail superintendent to prepare a list of deserving prisoners for legal aid so that their cases could be processed at the earliest. District Nazim, on demand by the jail superintendent assured to extend co-operation for the construction of shed for visitors and provision of AC for medical unit from district government fund.
