Major power breakdown that hit hard water supply to Karachi on Monday morning is likely to cause about 70 million gallon daily (MGD) water shortage. Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) sources said on Monday that the power breakdown took place due to heavy fog that disrupted working of two major grid stations at KDA Society and Pipri grid stations.
This caused disruption in the supply of 220 -kV circuit forcing closure of 800-megawatt power supply to the city.
This breakdown affected most parts of Defence Housing Authority, Clifton, PECHS, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Lyari, North Nazimabad, Nazimabad and Liaquatabad
The KESC sources said that repair work was under way and the areas without electricity would get it soon.
The power breakdown caused stoppage of water pumping stations of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB), which sent many areas without water. Badly affected pumping stations were Gharo, Pipri, Ninth Mile, and Shah Faisal Colony No 4; Saudabad and Future Colony.
The claimed that these pumping stations would be made functional by Monday evening, but till our going to press no progress was made.
The KWSB sources said that some areas were likely to remain without water on Tuesday, as the existing pumps would have to be serviced before starting.
