Prices of low grown Sri Lankan teas reached a record high at this week's auction on good demand, but high grown tea prices were mixed, brokers said on Tuesday.
"The Low Grown Elevation Average at the latest auction reached an all time record of 222.12 rupees," Tea and Produce brokers John Keells said in a statement.
The estimated gross sales average from the auction on Monday and Tuesday was 213.00 rupees ($2) per kg, up slightly from last week's 212.78 rupees, Forbes and Walker Tea Brokers said in a statement.
"Teas with all-round cup characteristics and a good leaf appearance will attract buyer attention ... in future sales," John Keells said.
Brokers reported excellent demand for low grown teas from Iran and Russia while there was selective buying interest from Dubai, Syria, Saudi Arabia and several other countries from the Middle East.
A majority of the high grown varieties on sale declined by five to eight rupees.
There were 5.1 million kgs of tea on offer this week and another 5.1 million kgs are expected to be on offer at the next auction.
