Britain's farm ministry on Wednesday estimated the UK wheat export surplus at 3.1 million tonnes for the 2004/05 (July-June) season, an increase of 40 percent on the previous season's 2.2 million tonnes.
It said the figure could include any stocks put into intervention storage.
In its first supply/demand balance sheet for the current campaign, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) said 15.7 million tonnes of wheat was produced in 2004, a jump of 10 percent over last year.
Traders said DEFRA's estimate for this year's exportable wheat surplus was smaller than had been expected.
Recent estimates had put the figure between 3.3 and as high as 4.0 million tonnes.
The DEFRA figures point to a larger use for wheat in animal feed rations on the domestic market.
