President General Pervez Musharraf has urged the commerce and foreign affairs ministries to make co-ordinated efforts for bolstering exports to the EU countries and the US, saying the resultant increase in the economic activity would help in reducing poverty and curb extremism through socio-economic development at the grassroots level.
He said, "The two ministries should have greater interaction with the EU and the US and ask them to reduce tariffs on Pakistani goods so that the exports witness a quantum leap in near future."
The president made these remarks during a briefing by the Commerce Ministry on Pakistan's market access strategy for future.
President Musharraf said greater production, industrial growth and generation of jobs coming in the wake of increase in the volume of trade with these powerful economies would touch off all-round sustainable progress.
The realisation of better economic opportunities to the common man would not only alleviate poverty, but also assist the government in bringing about a societal change as across-the-board development would wean away extremist elements from indulging in anti-social and anti-state activities," he emphasised.
The president said he would also take up the subject of expanding Pakistan's trade ties with these countries during his meetings with their top leadership.
Appreciating the presentation, that envisioned a comprehensive approach to diversifying and boosting Pakistani exports in the years ahead, the president said the strategy should be implemented through concerted efforts of both the ministries. Federal Commerce Minister Humayun Akhtar Khan, Textile Industries Minister Mushtaq Ali Cheema and Minister of State for Commerce Hamid Hayat Hiraj and senior government functionaries were present during the briefing.
