The World Bank (WB) has praised performance of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) government in NWFP for achieving targets set under its $270 million Structural Adjustment Credit (SAC) plan during financial year 2004-05.
The expression to this effect was made during a meeting of the WB mission with the NWFP Senior Minister Siraj-ul-Haq held at Civil Secretariat Peshawar. The mission led by WB Country Director John Wall also assured releasing last tranche of 90 million dollars for Frontier Government.
Additional Chief Secretary Mir Laiq Shah, the secretaries and authorities of finance, health, education, planning and development and excise and taxation departments and other senior officers were also present on this occasion.
Speaking in the meeting, the mission expressed satisfaction over the targets achieved under the Medium Term Reform Programme (MTRP) and it expressed its satisfaction on the overall situation.
It also appreciated the performance made by MMA government in education sector in particular. Various matters relating to the approval of $ 90 million third instalment of the SAC came under discussion wherein John Wall assured the Senior minister that recommendations for release of the loan amount were being communicated to the WB Headquarter as such.
The senior minister on this occasion gave a detailed briefing to the mission and informed them about initiatives of the government for improvement of social sectors in the province. While thanking the mission and WB for releasing the loan, he made it clear that policies of the MMA government were aimed at overall development of the province and prosperity of the people. He said lack of resources was main hurdle in putting the province on right track and hoped that WB would extend support to his government.
