The Central Board of Revenue (CBR) disposed of 1112 adjudication cases during July-September 2004-05 against 9224 pending cases. The amount involved in these cases was reduced to Rs 3.7 billion from Rs 36.2 billion.
CBR Chairman Abdullah Yusuf while addressing the conference of Collectors of Customs, Sales Tax and Central Excise (Adjudication/ Appeals) here on Saturday said that although it was satisfying that out of total of 9,224 pending adjudication cases 1112 had been decided in first quarter ended September 30, 2004, and the amount involved in these cases had been reduced to Rs 3.7 billion but still there was room for further improvement.
He said that priority must be given to those appeals which have been pending for over 12 months or involved large revenue.
He urged the collectors of customs to make all possible efforts for early disposal of all pending adjudication cases and appeals.
The Chairman further directed that the staffing and logistics problems of the Collectorates should be addressed and resolved. He also emphasised the need for changing the image of the organisation so that it becomes more vibrant, transparent and progressive.
There was also a need to recognise the dynamics of global competitiveness and take whatever initiatives required in this regard, he added.
During the conference the Collectors gave brief presentation on the performance of their Collectorates during the last quarter.
It was agreed, in principle, to authorise Collectors of Customs, Sales Tax and Central Excise (Appeals/Adjudication) to redistribute their workload among the officers of their respective collectorates.
